Brent's tips
for the dry season:
1) As we move further into the dry season, monitor soil moisture.
Even established plants welcome a good soaking once per week.
New plantings more often.
2) If you haven't fertilised in the last 3 months, it is time. Light
feedings during the dry season is recommended to sustain healthy growth
not necessarily to encourage more. Always water well after feeding for
two weeks, to dissolve the nutrients and get them down to the roots.
Remember, a plant has to drink it's own food. It can't eat it.
3) Bedding plants for the upcoming season:
Vinca, Gazania Daisy, Medal ion, Coleus, Galardia, Oomph rena, Dahlberg
Daisy, Celosia, Blue Salvia, Pentas, Heather, Blue Daze, Purslane, Portulaca
and Lantana are all good in the sun.
4) Shade loving bedding plants for spring and summer include
Red Salvia, Impatiens, red or green leaf wax Begonias and Torrenia.
5) Spring and early summer veggies are squash, sweet and hot
peppers, radishes, greens, corn, carrots, and watermelon.
6)Monitor your garden for plant pests. Plants already in a weakened
state by heat and drought will suffer even more quickly when
attacked by hungry sap suckers and leaf chewers.
